Charismatic French Formula One driver for Tyrrell Racing, classical pianist, and protégé of Jackie Stewart, whose film-star glamour and brilliant speed were tragically cut short on the eve of inheriting team leadership.

Biographical Record

Francois Cevert (1944–1973) won the 1969 French Formula Three Championship before Ken Tyrrell signed him to partner World Champion Jackie Stewart in Formula One. Stewart mentored Cevert like a younger brother, teaching him chassis balance and tactical discipline.

In 1971, Cevert won the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, becoming only the second Frenchman to win a World Championship Grand Prix. In 1973, having agreed to take over as Tyrrell's number one upon Stewart's planned retirement, Cevert suffered a catastrophic qualifying crash at Watkins Glen, prompting Stewart to withdraw immediately from his 100th GP.
