Francis Xavier (1506–1552 CE) was a brilliant university lecturer in Paris when won over to Christ by his roommate Ignatius of Loyola.

Appointed papal nuncio to the East, he sailed to Portuguese Goa, preaching with a handbell in the streets, traveling to Indonesia, and becoming the first Christian missionary to reach Japan in 1549.
