Biographical Record

Son of a prosperous Assisi silk merchant, Francis experienced spiritual conversion following battlefield captivity and illness, hearing Christ call to him from the crucifix of San Damiano: "Francis, go and repair my church." Stripping himself of worldly garments in the public square, he dedicated his life to the outcast and lepers.

During the Fifth Crusade in 1219, he crossed frontlines to dialogue peacefully with Sultan Al-Kamil of Egypt. Receiving the stigmata on Mount La Verna in 1224, his life remains a global emblem of peace, environmental reverence, and humility.
