"The water of Venice does not stand still for the ruler; it dances for the brush."

Archival Overview

Last great master of the Venetian veduta whose shimmering, painterly brushwork (pittura di tocco) and poetic capriccios anticipated 19th-century Impressionism.

Biographical Record

Francesco Guardi (1712–1793 CE) was born into a family of painters in Venice, turning to topographical views in middle age after Canaletto departed for England.

Unlike Canaletto's rigid architectural accuracy, Guardi favored rapid, nervous dabs of paint (pittura di tocco) that dissolved buildings into sparkling lagoon light, capturing the poignant decline of Venice.

Key Life Milestones

Regatta on the Grand Canal

Painted his masterpiece in the Gulbenkian Museum, dissolving the palazzi into shimmering vibrations of lagoon water and light.
