Biographical Record
Fra Angelico (born Guido di Pietro), beatified by the Catholic Church as Il Beato Angelico, was an Early Florentine Renaissance master and Dominican friar whose paintings radiated serene spiritual beauty. Working out of the convent of San Marco in Florence, he combined deep devotional asceticism with Renaissance spatial perspective and naturalism.
His cloister and cell frescoes for his fellow friars at San Marco, particularly his celebrated Annunciation at the top of the dormitory stairs, convey sublime modesty, divine gentleness, and luminous pastels. Honored by popes and patrons throughout Italy, Giorgio Vasari praised him as possessing 'a rare and perfect talent, who never took up his brush without first making a prayer.'
