Archival Overview

Pioneering Canadian radio broadcaster whose breathless play-by-play on Hockey Night in Canada and phrase "He shoots, he scores!" built national winter culture.

Biographical Record

Foster William Hewitt was the voice that defined Canadian hockey. Broadcasting his first game on CFCA radio in March 1923, Hewitt was selected by Conn Smythe in 1931 to occupy the legendary broadcast gondola high above the ice in the newly constructed Maple Leaf Gardens.

For forty years on radio and television, Hewitt greeted listeners with his signature opening, "Hello, Canada, and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland!" His staccato delivery and immortal catchphrase "He shoots, he scores!" united families around living room radios every Saturday evening. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1965.
