Biographical Record

Flora Nwapa (1931–1993) studied at University College Ibadan and the University of Edinburgh. In 1966, Heinemann published her debut novel 'Efuru', depicting a wealthy, independent Igbo woman who prospers in trade but faces social stigma due to childlessness, seeking spiritual solace in the river goddess Uhamiri.

In 1974, Nwapa founded Tana Press, becoming one of Africa's first female publishers, actively mentoring women writers and publishing children's books celebrating indigenous Igbo folklore and moral values.
