Biographical Record
Raghupati Sahay (pen name Firaq Gorakhpuri, 1896–1982) resigned from the prestigious Indian Civil Service to participate in the Non-Cooperation Movement, enduring imprisonment alongside Motilal Nehru. He subsequently served for decades as professor of English literature at Allahabad University.
In his monumental collection 'Gul-e-Naghma', Firaq synthesized classical Persian and Urdu ghazal forms with Hindu philosophical concepts of shringara (erotic beauty) and cosmic sorrow. He was the first Urdu poet honored with the Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary prize.
