Archival Overview
Pioneering Danish architect and industrial designer who introduced Danish Modern furniture to the United States, designed the Chieftain Chair, and created the UN Trusteeship Council Chamber.
Biographical Record
Finn Juhl was born on January 30, 1912, in Frederiksberg. Graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1934 under Kay Fisker, he broke away from rigid functionalism, treating chairs as sculptural organic art forms influenced by Jean Arp and Alexander Calder.
Collaborating with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, Juhl designed iconic masterpieces including the Pelican Chair (1940), Model 45 (1945), and the majestic Chieftain Chair (1949), separating the upholstered seat and back from the wooden frame to create lightness. In 1951–1952, he designed the entire Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, captivating the American design establishment.
