Biographical Record
Filippo Brunelleschi (1377–1446) transformed the course of Western art and architecture. Beginning as a goldsmith and sculptor, he traveled to Rome with Donatello to study classical Roman ruins. Around 1415, through famous optical mirror experiments outside the Florence Baptistery, Brunelleschi mathematically discovered geometric linear perspective with a vanishing point, fundamentally revolutionizing Renaissance painting.
In 1418, Brunelleschi won the competition to crown Florence Cathedral with a colossal octagonal dome. Defying conventional wisdom, he engineered a double-shell dome spanning 45 meters using a self-supporting herringbone brick pattern, invented ingenious hoist cranes and oxen-powered gears, and completed the largest masonry dome in the world without wooden centering scaffolds.
