Biographical Record
Fettouma Ouzegane was one of the earliest Muslim women to organize female workers in colonial Algiers in the 1940s. A tireless militant in the Union of Algerian Women (UFA) and the UGTA labor union, she established clandestine literacy circles and mutual aid societies in the working-class neighborhoods.
During the War of Liberation, she managed hazardous logistical and intelligence safehouses for the Autonomous Zone of Algiers. Following independence, she was elected to the National Assembly in 1962, fighting relentlessly for equal legal, educational, and economic rights for Algerian women.
