"An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it."

Archival Overview

Celebrated Colombian painter and sculptor who created "Boterismo"—a world-famous signature aesthetic depicting figures and objects in exaggerated, volumetric proportions exploring satire, sensuality, and violence.

Biographical Record

Fernando Botero (1932–2023) is universally recognized as Latin America's most celebrated living artist of his era. Born in Medellín, Botero drew early inspiration from pre-Columbian artifacts and Italian Renaissance masters like Piero della Francesca. In the late 1950s, he formulated his distinctive style, characterized by expanded volume, smooth contours, and gentle irony.

His monumental bronze sculptures have graced the world's grandest boulevards, including the Champs-Élysées in Paris, Park Avenue in New York, and the Grand Canal in Venice. Beyond his playful portraits of matadors, dancers, and clerical dignitaries, Botero addressed political violence in Colombia and produced a searing series confronting the Abu Ghraib torture abuses in 2005.

A magnificent philanthropist, he donated hundreds of his own works and his private collection of world masterpieces to establish the Museo Botero in Bogotá and the Museo de Antioquia in Medellín.
