Archival Overview
Algerian-born communist trade unionist who joined the FLN's Combattants de la Libération, becoming the only European-descended Algerian guillotined during the War of Independence.
Biographical Record
Fernand Iveton was born in the Clos Salambier (El Madania) neighborhood of Algiers to a French-Spanish working-class family and passionately embraced Algerian national identity. Working as a turner at the Hamma gas works, he was an active militant of the Algerian Communist Party (PCA).
In 1956, adhering to the FLN, he placed a timed bomb in an empty room at the gas works, deliberately configured to explode when no workers were present. Arrested before detonation and subjected to horrific electrical torture, he was sentenced to death by a military tribunal and executed by guillotine at Barberousse Prison on February 11, 1957.
