Biographical Record
Feng Shan Ho was born into poverty in Hunan and earned a doctorate in political economy from the University of Munich. In 1937, he was appointed to the Chinese legation in Vienna, becoming Consul General shortly after Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria (Anschluss) in 1938.
When Nazi authorities required Jews to produce foreign visas to emigrate, most consulates closed their doors. Defying direct orders from his ambassador in Berlin, Ho issued thousands of Shanghai transit visas to desperate families, allowing them to flee Dachau and Buchenwald. He was honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations in 2000.
