Archival Overview
Beloved Flemish novelist and illustrator whose jubilant 1916 novel Pallieter celebrated the epicurean joy of living and whose Boerenpsalm (1935) immortalized the peasant faith of the Kempen region.
Biographical Record
After surviving a life-threatening illness in his youth, Timmermans experienced an overwhelming spiritual renaissance of gratitude for life. In 1916, amidst the horrors of World War I, he published Pallieter, an explosion of joyful sensualism, lush feasts, and sunny pastoral love along the Nete River.
The book became an international best-seller, turning 'pallieteren' into a Dutch word meaning to enjoy life to the absolute fullest. His later works, including Boerenpsalm and his historical novel Pieter Bruegel (1928), showed profound spiritual tenderness.
