Archival Overview
Charismatic Cameroonian physician and President of the UPC who led international diplomacy for Cameroon's liberation before being assassinated with thallium by the French secret service in Geneva.
Biographical Record
Felix-Roland Moumie was born on November 1, 1925, in Foumban into a Bamum family. Educated at the prestigious École de Medecine de Dakar, he graduated as a physician, treating impoverished patients across Cameroon while organizing UPC anti-colonial committees.
Elected President of the UPC in 1952, Moumie forged close alliances with Pan-Africanist titans Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Toure, and Gamal Abdel Nasser. Operating in exile from Cairo, Conakry, and Accra after the UPC was outlawed, he mobilized international diplomatic pressure at the United Nations. On October 16, 1960, an agent of the French secret service (SDECE) posing as a journalist poisoned his drink with lethal thallium in a Geneva restaurant, leading to his agonizing death on November 3.
