Biographical Record
Felix Klein (1849–1925) transformed the University of Gottingen into the preeminent mathematical capital of the world. In his 1872 Erlangen Program, he proposed that geometries should be classified according to the transformation groups that leave their fundamental properties invariant.
In 1882, he conceived the Klein bottle—a four-dimensional topological surface with no boundary and only one continuous side. Klein was also a pioneering reformer of mathematics education and championed women's entry into university faculties.
