Biographical Record

Fazang (643–712 CE), of Sogdian ancestry, was the pre-eminent philosophical systematician of the Avatamsaka (Huayan) Sutra under the patronage of Empress Wu Zetian.

To explain the complex doctrine of universal mutual interpenetration ('all in one, one in all'), he demonstrated with mirrors and a candle, and used the golden lion in the imperial palace to prove non-obstruction of form and emptiness.
