Archival Overview

World-renowned Moroccan sociologist and feminist author whose groundbreaking books Beyond the Veil and The Forgotten Queens of Islam revolutionized the understanding of gender in the Muslim world.

Biographical Record

Raised in a traditional domestic courtyard in Fez, Fatima Mernissi earned her doctorate in sociology at Brandeis University in the United States before joining Mohammed V University in Rabat as a professor. In 1975, she published *Beyond the Veil*, a foundational classic of global post-colonial feminist theory.

In *The Forgotten Queens of Islam* and *The Veil and the Male Elite*, she demonstrated through rigorous hadith methodology that early Islam championed women's intellectual and political autonomy. Awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Letters in 2003, she was an inspiring champion of Mediterranean civic dialogue.
