"She reclaimed the storyteller's circle for women, speaking truth to power in the open square."

Archival Overview

Visionary dramatist, director, and university professor who made history as Morocco's first female Halqa street storyteller, transforming traditional masculine oral theater into feminist social critique.

Biographical Record

Fatima Chebchoub earned a doctorate in performance studies from the University of Pennsylvania. Breaking into the exclusively male preserve of the traditional Moroccan Halqa (public circle performance) in public squares like Jemaa el-Fna, she performed solo satirical storytelling using the moniker 'Al-Qechbala'.

Her bold plays tackled corruption, illiteracy, and women's rights, establishing her as an internationally acclaimed researcher and performance artist until her tragic drowning in 2006.
