Archival Overview

Visionary Arab Muslim woman known as 'Umm al-Banin' who migrated from Kairouan to Fez and used her entire inherited fortune to found the University of al-Qarawiyyin in 859 CE, recognized by UNESCO as the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

Biographical Record

Fatima bint Muhammad al-Fihri (c. 800–880 CE) was the daughter of a wealthy merchant who migrated from Kairouan, Tunisia, to Fez, Morocco, during the reign of Idris II. Following the deaths of her father and husband, Fatima inherited an immense fortune, resolving to dedicate every coin to an enduring pious work of benefit to humanity.

On Ramadan 1, 245 AH (November 30, 859 CE), having fasted continuously from the day construction began, Fatima laid the foundation stone of the Mosque and University of al-Qarawiyyin. She excavated the stone and water directly from the purchased land so as not to burden the city. Al-Qarawiyyin evolved into the intellectual capital of the Mediterranean, educating giants like Ibn Khaldun, Al-Idrisi, Maimonides, and Pope Sylvester II.
