Biographical Record
Fatema Mernissi was born into an aristocratic domestic harem in Fez, an experience she memorably recounted in her lyrical memoir 'Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood'. Educated at the Sorbonne and Brandeis University, she became professor of sociology at Mohammed V University in Rabat.
Mernissi was a pioneer of Islamic feminism, conducting meticulous Hadith hermeneutics to demonstrate that early Islam promoted gender equality and female leadership.
