Archival Overview
Iconic pioneer of Syrian modern art whose textured, expressionist canvases merged ancient Assyrian-Aramaean motifs with raw human anguish.
Biographical Record
Fateh Moudarres was born in Aleppo and grew up in the rural villages of northern Syria, deeply influenced by the ancient stone ruins and peasant folklore of the Levant. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, absorbing European expressionism and surrealism.
Returning to Damascus, Moudarres emerged as the leader of Syrian modern art, serving as longtime president of the Syndicate of Fine Arts. His thickly impastoed canvases, featuring crowds of square-faced, stoic human figures with haunting gazes reminiscent of ancient Sumerian and Palmyrene votive statues, captured the existential anguish and enduring resilience of the Arab world.
