Archival Overview
Passionate environmentalist and crusading author whose forty-four books, including People of the Deer and Never Cry Wolf, sold twenty-five million copies worldwide and revolutionized wolf conservation.
Biographical Record
A decorated veteran of the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy in WWII, Mowat was sent to the subarctic Keewatin region in 1947 to study caribou. Outraged by the starvation of the Ihalmiut Inuit, he published People of the Deer (1952), exposing governmental neglect.
In Never Cry Wolf (1963), based on his solitary Arctic field research, Mowat dismantled the myth of wolves as savage killers, showing they primarily culled sick caribou and ate mice. Adapted into an acclaimed Disney film, Mowat's books were translated into fifty-two languages, inspiring modern wildlife preservation.
