Farid al-Din Attar (c. 1145–1221 CE) operated an apothecary shop in Nishapur, dispensing herbal medicines before abandoning commerce for poetic contemplation.
His masterwork Mantiq al-Tayr ('The Conference of the Birds') describes thirty birds crossing seven perilous valleys in search of the mythical Simorgh, only to discover that the Divine was reflected in their own purified souls.
