Archival Overview

Almoravid princess who donned male armor and sword to fight on the ramparts of Marrakech during the Almohad storming of the citadel in April 1147.

Biographical Record

Princess Fannu bint Umar was a noblewoman of the Almoravid royal dynasty residing in the imperial palace of Marrakech. When Almohad forces under Abd al-Mu'min breached the walls of Marrakech after an eleven-month siege in April 1147, Fannu refused to hide in the palace quarters.

Donning mail armor and a helmet, she took up a sword and shield, leading royal guards to defend the breach of the Ksar al-Hajar citadel. Even Almohad chroniclers recorded her extraordinary valor with awe, noting that she fought off waves of veteran soldiers before falling on the battlefield as a legendary symbol of Moroccan female heroism.
