Archival Overview

Beloved Palestinian statesman and leader in Jerusalem who led the Palestinian delegation to Madrid and established Orient House as the de facto capital.

Biographical Record

Faisal Abd al-Qadir al-Husseini was born in Baghdad while his father, the legendary Palestinian military commander Abd al-Qadir al-Husseini, was in exile. Returning to Jerusalem, he studied science in Cairo and military engineering in Aleppo before founding the Arab Studies Society in Jerusalem in 1979.

Imprisoned repeatedly by Israeli authorities, Husseini emerged in the 1980s as the undisputed leader of Jerusalem's Palestinian community and led the Palestinian negotiation team at the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference. Operating from Orient House, he defended Jerusalemite civil rights and property with charismatic diplomacy. His funeral in June 2001 brought over one hundred thousand mourners into the streets of Jerusalem.
