Biographical Record
Faiq Hassan was born in Baghdad and showed prodigal talent early, earning a royal scholarship to study at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Roger Bissière. Returning to Baghdad in 1938, he established the painting department at the Institute of Fine Arts, teaching generations of Iraqi painters.
In 1950, Hassan founded the Pioneers Group (Al-Rowwad), taking artists out of studios into the Iraqi countryside and marshlands to paint daily life, Bedouin horses, and vibrant souks directly from nature. His masterful brushwork, luminous coloration, and monumental public mosaics permanently defined the visual identity of 20th-century Iraq.
