"Nothing in coal should be wasted: from the smoke of the ovens, industry creates energy and fertilizer."

Archival Overview

Belgian industrialist and civil engineer whose invention of the Coppée by-product coke oven transformed the global metallurgy and chemical coal industries across Europe and America.

Biographical Record

Graduating from the École des Mines in Mons, Coppée tackled the inefficiency of traditional beehive ovens in converting coal to metallurgical coke. In 1853, he patented his revolutionary vertical-flue coke oven, which drastically reduced coking time from days to hours while capturing volatile ammonia and coal-tar by-products.

His ovens were rapidly adopted by ironmasters across Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, and Russia. He founded the multinational industrial engineering conglomerate Evence Coppée & Cie, establishing an enduring family industrial dynasty that shaped Walloon steelmaking.
