Born impoverished and out of wedlock in rural Argentina, Eva Duarte (1919–1952) moved to Buenos Aires at fifteen, becoming a successful radio and film actress before marrying Juan Domingo Peron in 1945. As First Lady, Evita became the passionate champion of the working-class poor (los descamisados).

Evita successfully campaigned for women's suffrage, enacted in 1947, and founded the Female Peronist Party. Through the Eva Peron Foundation, she personally handed out housing, schools, hospital beds, and clothing to hundreds of thousands of impoverished citizens daily before succumbing to cancer at thirty-three.
