Eusébio

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was born in the Mafalala neighborhood of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo, Mozambique). Discovered by former Brazilian player José Carlos Bauer while playing barefoot for local club Sporting Clube de Lourenço Marques, Eusébio was signed by S.L. Benfica in December 1960 under the guidance of legendary Hungarian coach Béla Guttmann.

Eusébio spent fifteen sensational seasons at Benfica, scoring 473 goals in 440 competitive matches. In May 1962, at just twenty years old, he scored two decisive second-half goals in Amsterdam to defeat Real Madrid 5-3 in the European Cup final, ending Madrid's continental supremacy. He would go on to win eleven Portuguese Primeira Liga titles and five Portuguese Cups with Benfica.

At the 1966 World Cup in England, Eusébio captivated the globe. After helping eliminate two-time defending champions Brazil in the group stage, he orchestrated one of football's greatest comebacks in the quarter-final against North Korea: trailing 3-0, Eusébio scored four consecutive goals to secure a 5-3 triumph. Winning the tournament's Golden Boot with nine goals, he guided Portugal to a historic third-place finish. In 2015, Eusébio's remains were re-interred in the National Pantheon in Lisbon, an honor reserved for Portugal's greatest cultural icons.
