Biographical Record
Euclid of Alexandria (c. 325–265 BCE) taught mathematics at the Musaeum of Alexandria under Ptolemy I Soter. His thirteen-book compilation, The Elements (*Stoicheia*), synthesized the geometric and number-theoretic knowledge of the ancient world into an axiomatic masterpiece.
Beginning with five fundamental postulates and common notions, Euclid proved hundreds of propositions through rigorous logical deduction, including the Pythagorean theorem, the infinitude of prime numbers, and the construction of the five regular Platonic solids. Second only to the Bible in total printed editions, The Elements trained minds from Newton and Spinoza to Abraham Lincoln.
