"Honor the wisdom that guides the sword, for true imperial greatness is born of foresight and artistic grace."

Archival Overview

Visionary Oba of Benin (reigned c. 1504–1550) who triumphed in the Idah War, instituted the prestigious office of Queen Mother (Iyoba) for his mother Idia, and presided over the Golden Age of Benin bronze and brass casting.

Biographical Record

Oba Esigie succeeded his father Ozolua after defeating his brother Arhuanran in a pivotal succession struggle. When the northern kingdom of Igala launched an invasion in 1515, Esigie, aided by the military intelligence and spiritual advice of Queen Mother Idia, decisively repelled the Attah of Igala's forces.

Esigie honored his mother by creating the title of Iyoba and establishing her independent palace at Uselu. Under his enlightened patronage, the royal guild of brass casters (Igun Eronmwon) produced the iconic cast-bronze wall plaques and ivory hip masks that represent pinnacles of world sculpture.
