Archival Overview
Towering Argentine novelist and moral authority who wrote The Tunnel and On Heroes and Tombs, and led the landmark CONADEP investigation Nunca Más into military junta disappearances.
Biographical Record
Ernesto Sabato earned a doctorate in physics from the National University of La Plata and worked at the Curie Institute in Paris before abandoning a promising scientific career to devote himself to literature and painting.
Sabato authored three classic existential novels: 'The Tunnel' (1948, praised by Albert Camus), 'On Heroes and Tombs' (1961), and 'The Angel of Darkness' (1974). In 1983, newly elected President Raúl Alfonsín appointed him president of the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP); the resulting report 'Nunca Más' documented 8,960 state-sponsored forced disappearances and laid the evidentiary basis for the Trial of the Juntas.
