Archival Overview
Alberta premier whose twenty-five-year premiership guided Alberta from post-Depression agrarian debt into modern oil wealth after the 1947 Leduc No. 1 strike.
Biographical Record
Ernest Charles Manning was William Aberhart's primary radio broadcaster and lieutenant in the Depression-era Social Credit movement. Assuming the premiership of Alberta in 1943 upon Aberhart's death, Manning governed for twenty-five consecutive years, winning seven consecutive landslide election victories.
Manning abandoned unworkable monetary theories, instead managing Alberta's oil boom following the 1947 Leduc discovery with prudent fiscal conservatism, eliminating provincial debt and funding modern hospitals and universities. Throughout his premiership, he broadcasted Canada's National Bible Hour to millions every Sunday, later serving in the Senate of Canada.
