Erik Satie

Erik Satie was a French composer and pianist whose minimalist, unconventional, and eccentric aesthetic exerted a profound influence on 20th-century avant-garde art, Dadaism, and ambient music. Playing piano in Montmartre cabarets like Le Chat Noir, Satie rejected the heavy Wagnerian romanticism dominating Europe in favor of radical simplicity and sparse modal clarity.

His celebrated piano works, including the Gymnopédies (1888) and Gnossiennes, introduced an ethereal, serene timelessness. Satie was a pioneer of 'musique d'ameublement' (furniture music)—music meant to blend into the background rather than demand direct attention. Revered by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and 'Les Six', Satie remains one of music's great visionary iconoclasts.
