Archival Overview
Viennese child prodigy hailed by Mahler whose opera 'Die tote Stadt' and symphonic, swashbuckling Hollywood scores ('The Adventures of Robin Hood') created the classic golden age cinema sound.
Biographical Record
Erich Wolfgang Korngold was born on May 29, 1897, in Brünn, the son of Vienna's most powerful music critic, Julius Korngold. At age eleven, his ballet Der Schneemann was staged at the Vienna Court Opera, and at age twenty-three, his tragic opera Die tote Stadt premiered to international sensation.
Invited to Hollywood by Max Reinhardt in 1934, Korngold created the majestic symphonic film score, winning two Oscars (for Anthony Adverse and The Adventures of Robin Hood). His lavish orchestral style directly influenced John Williams and modern cinema scoring. After World War II, he returned to concert music, composing his celebrated Violin Concerto.
