Biographical Record
Eqrem Çabej was born on August 6, 1908, in Eskişehir, Turkey, and raised in Gjirokastër. Studying linguistics and Indo-European comparative philology at the University of Vienna under Norbert Jokl and Paul Kretschmer, he completed his doctorate in 1933 with a groundbreaking study on Italo-Albanian folk customs.
Çabej served as the intellectual pillar of the Institute of History and Linguistics in Tirana. Through rigorous comparative Indo-European methodology, his multivolume Studime etimologjike në fushë të shqipes (Etymological Studies in the Field of Albanian) and his critical edition of Gjon Buzuku's 1555 Meshari established that Albanian developed in situ from ancient Illyrian, earning him international scientific veneration.
