Biographical Record
Enrique José Bolaños Geyer was born in Masaya into a family of German-Nicaraguan heritage and earned an industrial engineering degree from Saint Louis University in the United States. Returning to Nicaragua, he built his family's agro-industrial business, SAJONIA, into one of the country's largest cotton producers. As president of the private enterprise council COSEP in the 1980s, he fiercely resisted Sandinista confiscations, enduring repeated imprisonment.
Elected Vice President under Arnoldo Alemán in 1996, Bolaños ran for president in 2001, defeating Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega. Upon taking office, Bolaños stunned Nicaragua's political establishment by immediately launching an uncompromising anti-corruption campaign that prosecuted his former ally Alemán for laundering $100 million in state funds, securing his conviction. Despite being isolated by an alliance between Alemán's party and Ortega, Bolaños modernized the economy, signed CAFTA-DR, and founded an open digital archive documenting Nicaragua's modern history.
