Oxford-educated diplomat and reformist Prime Minister of Ethiopia who attempted constitutional reform to establish a democratic parliamentary monarchy before being executed by the Derg.
Biographical Record
Lij Endelkachew Makonnen was born in 1927 in Addis Ababa, the son of former Prime Minister Ras Betwoded Makonnen Endelkachew. Educated at Oriel College, Oxford, he joined the foreign service, serving as Ambassador to the Court of St. James and Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
In February 1974, amidst mounting student protests, strikes, and army discontent, Emperor Haile Selassie appointed Makonnen Prime Minister. He immediately drafted a progressive, democratic constitution transforming Ethiopia into a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament and free press. However, radical elements of the military Derg undermined reforms, arrested him in July, and executed him without trial on November 23, 1974.
