Biographical Record

Rising from humble beginnings in the Hippodrome of Constantinople, Theodora captivated Justinian with her fierce intellect and determination. As Augusta, she participated equally in legislative governance, prohibiting forced prostitution, granting wives property rights, and providing safe refuge for Monophysite refugees.

During the Nika riots of 532 CE, when advisors urged the emperor to flee by sea, her legendary speech declaring that "the imperial purple is a noble shroud" rallied imperial forces to victory, immortalized in the gleaming mosaics of San Vitale in Ravenna.
