Longest-reigning emperor of the Tang Dynasty whose Kaiyuan Era marked the pinnacle of Chinese classical poetry, painting, and opera, tragically shattered by the An Lushan Rebellion.
Biographical Record
Li Longji (Emperor Xuanzong, 685–762 CE) restored Tang dynastic stability in 712. His 'Kaiyuan Era' (713–741) was a golden age of unparalleled peace and cultural splendor, during which poets Li Bai and Du Fu flourished, and Xuanzong founded the legendary Pear Garden Academy, training the first professional actors and musicians in Chinese history.
In his later years, enchanted by his imperial consort Yang Guifei, Xuanzong neglected state affairs and trusted military commissioner An Lushan. In 755, An Lushan revolted, marching on Chang'an and forcing the emperor to flee, while mutinous troops demanded Yang Guifei's execution at Mawei Courier Station.
