British political activist who organized the UK suffragette movement and founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), using direct action under the motto 'Deeds, Not Words' to win women the right to vote.

Biographical Record

Emmeline Pankhurst (née Goulden; 1858 – 1928) was a British political activist and the formidable leader of the British suffragettes. Frustrated by decades of polite, ineffective lobbying for female voting rights, Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in Manchester in 1903 under the revolutionary motto 'Deeds, Not Words'.

Pankhurst led mass rallies, demonstrations, and civil disobedience campaigns that frequently clashed with police. When imprisoned, suffragettes engaged in hunger strikes, enduring brutal force-feeding by authorities. Pankhurst was arrested and imprisoned multiple times. Her militancy brought the issue of women's enfranchisement to the forefront of global politics, culminating in the Representation of the People Act 1928, which granted women full voting equality with men weeks after her death.
