Archival Overview

Algerian religious and military leader who founded the modern Algerian state, led a legendary fifteen-year resistance against French colonial conquest, and earned global acclaim for defending thousands of Christians in Damascus.

Biographical Record

Emir Abdelkader al-Jazairi (1808–1883) was proclaimed Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-Mu'minin) at age twenty-four, uniting western Algerian tribes against the French invasion. A master of cavalry mobility and guerrilla strategy, he established administrative capitals, mints, and armories, forcing France to sign the Treaties of Desmichels (1834) and Tafna (1837) recognizing his sovereign state.

After his capture in 1847 and subsequent exile in Damascus, Abdelkader demonstrated supreme humanitarian heroism during the 1860 riots by sheltering over 10,000 Christians in his palace, defying violent mobs and earning international honors from Abraham Lincoln, Queen Victoria, and Napoleon III.
