Archival Overview
Visionary Norwegian artist and master of stained glass and frescoes who created Tomba Emanuelle, an extraordinary windowless barrel-vaulted mausoleum covered in erotic-existential frescoes.
Biographical Record
August Emanuel Vigeland was born on December 2, 1875, in Mandal, the younger brother of Gustav Vigeland. He studied religious art, stained glass, and fresco painting in Paris, Berlin, and Florence, immersing himself in Italian Renaissance techniques.
Vigeland executed magnificent stained glass windows and frescoes for major Nordic cathedrals, including Lund Cathedral and Aarhus Cathedral. In 1926, he began constructing his private studio at Slemdal in Oslo, which he converted into a windowless mausoleum named Tomba Emanuelle. Its 800 square meters of walls and barrel vault are covered in a hypnotic fresco cycle titled Vita (Life), exploring conception, erotic ecstasy, labor, and mortality in candlelit resonance.
