Archival Overview

Quaker reformer revered as the 'Angel of Prisons' who transformed conditions for incarcerated women and children in Newgate Prison and founded modern prison reform.

Biographical Record

Elizabeth Fry was born into a prominent Quaker family in Norwich and became an acknowledged minister of the Society of Friends. In 1813, she made her first visit to London's notorious Newgate Prison, where hundreds of women and their children were crammed into filthy, squalid, unheated cells.

Fry established a school inside Newgate, provided clean clothing, and organized the Association for the Improvement of the Female Prisoners in Newgate. In 1818, she became the first woman to present evidence before a British Parliamentary Committee, sparking sweeping humanitarian legislation across Europe.
