Élie Ducommun

Élie Ducommun was born in Geneva, the son of a clockmaker. A gifted writer and linguist, he became a tutor to a wealthy family in Saxony before returning to Switzerland to edit political newspapers, including the radical democratic journal Revue de Genève. Serving as Chancellor of the State of Geneva from 1862 to 1865, he later became a member of the Grand Council of Geneva and the Grand Council of Bern.

In 1867, Ducommun helped establish the League of Peace and Freedom (Ligue de la paix et de la liberté) alongside Victor Hugo and Giuseppe Garibaldi. From 1873 to 1891, he worked as secretary-general of the Jura-Simplon Railway, a major alpine transport enterprise.

When the International Peace Bureau (Bureau international de la paix) was founded in Bern in 1891 following the Universal Peace Congresses, Ducommun was chosen as its first director. Despite holding demanding railway administrative positions, Ducommun served the Peace Bureau entirely without salary, writing thousands of letters, publishing newsletters, and coordinating peace societies across Europe and North America to mobilize public opinion against militarism. In 1902, Ducommun was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Charles Albert Gobat.
