Recognized as Morocco's first registered indigenous modern architect, pioneer of post-colonial modernist design who played a leading role in the reconstruction of Agadir following the 1960 earthquake.
Biographical Record
Elie Azagury was born into a Moroccan Jewish family in Casablanca and graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1944. Returning to Morocco, he was the first Moroccan architect to establish an independent practice in the country.
Following the catastrophic 1960 Agadir earthquake, King Mohammed V appointed Azagury to lead the reconstruction of the New Talborjt district. Azagury pioneered a climatically adapted, brutalist yet deeply Moroccan modernist civic architecture, incorporating patios, natural ventilation, and local stone.
