Biographical Record

El Lissitzky studied engineering and architecture in Germany before returning to Vitebsk to teach alongside Marc Chagall and Kazimir Malevich. Under Malevich's influence, he created 'Proun' (Projects for the Affirmation of the New)—three-dimensional geometric constructions that bridged the gap between two-dimensional painting and spatial architecture.

Lissitzky revolutionized typography, book design, and exhibition spaces, designing the immersive 'Abstract Cabinet' in Hannover. His civil war propaganda poster 'Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge' (1919) remains one of the supreme icons of modern graphic design, synthesizing political message and abstract geometry.
