Biographical Record
Born Mohamed Idir Halo in the heart of the Casbah of Algiers into a family originally from Azeffoun, Kabylie, El Anka studied under master Cheikh Mustapha Nador. Following Nador's death in 1926, the nineteen-year-old took over the musical orchestra, introducing a revolutionary mandole guitar, modern percussion, and syncopated tempos.
El Anka memorized and recorded over 350 classical qasidas (poetic epics) and composed 130 original melodies. As professor at the Municipal Conservatory of Algiers, he codified Chaabi pedagogy, elevating street folk music into an acclaimed academic discipline. His recordings (such as Lahmam Lli Rabbaytou) remain sacred monuments of Algerian musical identity.
